June 3rd, 2023 - Phabuilder, an innovative synthetic biology company, announced that it has started construction of its new PHA production site in Hubei province, China. The new factory has the production capacity of 30kt/annum, which represents the world's largest PHA plant under NGIB(Next Generation Industrial Biotechnology) technology.
The new 80,000㎡ factory is built by Hubei Phangel Biotechnology Co., Ltd, a joint venture established by Phabuilder and Angel Yeast, with a total investment of $14.8 million(1.05 billion RMB). Phabuilder will be able to use non-food feedstock to produce various types of biodegradable polymer PHA in the new factory, with the applications of medical treatment, cosmetics, fiber and disposables, etc.
Phabuilder's first 1kt/a synthetic biology intelligent factory was officially put into operation in October 2022. Eight months later, the construction of the new factory soon started, showcasing Phabuilder's capacity from R&D to industrialization.
Based on the experience of digital construction of the first factory, Phabuilder aims to further enhance the level of automation, intelligence and efficiency. The new factory is expected to have an integrated digital manufacturing system, employing a 'Digital Twin' that provides automated production, information control and energy efficiency control to optimize productivity and process.
Sherry Xu, Chairman of Phabuilder, said, "The establishment of the new factory is another milestone of Phabuilder’s development in industrialization. We will adhere to independent R&D, further focus on the synthetic biology industry chain, and also look forward to continuing to collaborate with the government and industrial partners to contribute more to industrial development."
